Saturday Morning

I have written so many times about our weekly breakfast meetings early on Saturday mornings that you are probably already rolling your eyes as you read this. But those meetings have become an important part of my Christian life that I share with you in this blog. This morning we had four men and a boy again. The prayer over our food always extends to cover our fellowship as well.

Our discussion covers a variety of topics including current events, personal experiences, videos we’ve watched, books we are reading, devotional studies, prayer requests, praise reports and much more. I’m the oldest, so my contribution is a little bit of wisdom and a lot of humor. One example of my brand of humor; “A female friend of mine put a bumper sticker on the back of her car that reads, ‘Honk if you find me attractive’. Then she sits at a green light until she feels better about herself.” (If that brought a smile to your face, I feel better about myself.) Here is one of my all-time favorites. A burglar waited until the family left and then broke into their dark home. As he quietly walked through the living room looking for something valuable to put in his sack he heard a voice, “Jesus is watching you!” He froze for a minute then took another step and again heard, “Jesus is watching you!” Holding his breath he shined his flashlight around the room and found a parrot in a cage in the corner. He asked, “Was that you?” The bird replied, ”Yes.” Letting out a big sigh of relief, he asked the bird, “What is your name?” The bird said, “My name Is Moses.” The burglar broke out in laughter. “What kind of people would name their parrot Moses?” The bird answered, “The same kind of people who named their Rottweiler Jesus.”

The other men contribute their unique perspectives and personalities. We very seldom disagree, but we do offer a variety of thoughts and opinions about any topic. As brothers in Christ, we have a common Spirit that is always present and I have often sensed the presence of our Lord at our table, keeping his promise to join two or more who gather as His followers. (Matthew 18:20)

I cannot emphasize enough what young Benny adds to our meetings. He always brings a toy or something to keep him occupied while we are talking about boring stuff for a young boy. Today he had a book and a Rubik’s Cube. But when we engage him by asking him a question, he opens up like a flower. I find his excitement and enthusiasm for life contagious. I don’t have grandchildren or greatgrandchildren so I always feel refreshed and energized after being around him. Those of us who have been around as long as I have need to be reminded how amazing and exciting life is. Benny always gives me that reminder. No wonder Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (Matthew 19:14)

I hope you have a small group of Christian brothers or sisters you can meet with on a regular basis for fellowship.
